Program overview

This program is designed to improve the care of diabetes patients including, but not limited to, update on diabetes meds, how to regulate diabetes meds, family practice and diabetes and how sleep issues including sleep apnea affect diabetic patients.

Objectives

  • Identify what periodontal disease is, what it looks like and how it affects diabetes and glycemic control.
  • Explain how to perform a basic oral exam and generate a referral
  • Review main pathophysiological defects in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Review updated treatment options for type 2 diabetes.
  • Acknowledge new pharmacologic and technologic therapies.
  • Examine treatment approaches for diabetic patients with cancer.
  • Review causes of blood sugar abnormalities associated with cancer and cancer treatment
  • Identify challenges to diabetes control in the cancer patient.
  • Acknowledge updates in Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes.
  • Identify the challenges in caring for patients with diabetes in a primary care setting.
  • Identify how sleep apnea affects a diabetic patient’s hemoglobin A1C and overnight hypoglycemia.
  • Examine skin conditions associated with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

    Physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other and other interested healthcare professionals.
