Grant funding from the Advanced Nurse Education-Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) aims to provide better physical and mental health care treatments for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. The three-year HRSA ANE-SANE Grant was awarded to the Pittsburg State University, Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing in October 2021 to train and support nurses and organizations in rural areas of Kansas

OBJECTIVES

Following this program, the participants can be expected to:
   1.Verbalize and demonstrate clinical competency in performing a medicalforensic sexual and/or physical assault examination of a pediatric patient.
   2.Verbalize and demonstrate clinical competency in performing a detailed female and male ano-genital examination, including positioning techniques.
   3.Verbalize and demonstrate the ability to utilize assistive visualization techniques, including positioning, distraction, and floating the hymen
   4.Verbalize and demonstrate competency and application of critical thinking skills in a variety of sexual assault examination scenarios including drug facilitated assault, mandatory reporting

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this clinical training, nurses will have a more comprehensive understanding of the medical-legal examination and factors affecting the care of the pediatric sexual assault patient. Lecture and return demonstration of essential skills utilizing live models, including history taking, assessment, forensic photography, evidence collection, patient education, care planning and discharge, will be the core focus of this training. This clinical training will enhance the nurse’s ability to provide comprehensive care to the pediatric population in a variety of complex patient scenarios.

RN’s who have completed a 40 hour SANE/SART Pediatric Course (REQUIRED).

The normal registration fee for this course is being waived thanks to the support of the Advanced Nurse Education-Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) aims to provide better physical and mental health care treatments for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. The grant funds will be used for recruiting, training, and certifying nurses for forensic exams and multi-disciplinary members of sexual assault victims for better evidence collection and potentially higher prosecution rates.
