COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Renewal Course is designed for healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support beyond basic life support through the stabilization or transport phases of a pediatric emergency, either in or out of the hospital.

The goal of the PALS course is to aid the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Skills taught include recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment; effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

A current BLS Healthcare Provider Card and PALS Card is required for the course. Please fax a copy of your card to 785-623-5108
  • Complete the PALS Pre-Course Checklist Test on student website (www.heart.org/eccstudent) and bring the checklist test to the course.
  • Participants must score at least an 84% on the pre-course test. You may repeat the test until your score is at least 84% A current BLS Healthcare Provider Card and PALS Card is required for the course.

    OBJECTIVES

    Following this program, the participants can be expected to:
       1. Understand and perform the systematic approach to pediatric assessment of a seriously ill or injured child, including the general, primary, secondary, and tertiary assessments.
       2. Understand the "assess-categorize-decide-act" approach to management of a seriously ill Infant or child.
       3. Recognize and manage a child with a life-threatening bradyarrhythmias, tachyarrhythmia, or cardiac arrest rhythm.
       4. Describe key elements of resuscitation team behaviors and explain why the foundation of successful resuscitation includes both mastery of basic skills and effective team dynamics.
       5. Recognize and manage a child in respiratory distress or failure and/or compensated or hypotensive shock.
       6. Prevent further deterioration of the child's condition during the stabilization and transfer phases of care.

    COURSE DESCRIPTION

    The Advanced Cardiovascular (ACLS) Provider Course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies.

    Through didactic instruction and active participation in simulated cases, the students will enhance their skills and clinical decision-making abilities for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiopulmonary arrest, acute arrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes.

    Students are taught to use the following important concepts:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Survey
  • High-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • ACLS Survey
  • ACLS algorithms
  • Effective resuscitation team dynamics
  • Immediate post-cardiac arrest care

    The goal of the ACLS Provider Course is to improve outcomes for adult patients with cardiac arrest and other cardiopulmonary emergencies through provider training.

  • Participants must score at least an 70% on the pre-course test. You may repeat the test until your score is at least 70%

    OBJECTIVES

    Following this program, the participants can be expected to:
       1. Apply the "BLS, Primary and Secondary Assessments" sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients.
       2. Perform prompt, high-quality BLS including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early AED use.
       3. Recognize respiratory arrest.
       4. Perform early management of respiratory arrest.
       5. Discuss early recognition and management of acute coronary syndromes including appropriate disposition.
       6. Discuss early recognition and management of stroke including appropriate disposition.
       7. Recognize bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
       8. Perform early management of bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
       9. Recognize cardiac arrest.
       10.Perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post-cardiac arrest care.
       11.Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient's physiologic response and delivering real-time feedback to the team.
       12.Model effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team.
       13.Recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
       14.Discuss how the use of a rapid response team (RRT) or medical emergency team (MET) may improve patient outcomes.
       15.Define systems of cares.
