The AHA’s PALS Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC. This classroom, Instructor-led course uses a series of videos and simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, effective resuscitation, and team dynamics. The goal of the PALS Course is to improve the quality of care provided to seriously ill or injured children, resulting in improved outcomes.
In the AHA’s advanced pediatric course, students learn how to use a systematic approach to quickly assess, identify the underlying cause, and treat pediatric patients in emergency situations. Students interact with real pediatric patient cases, realistic simulations, and animations to assess and treat these pediatric patients. This includes applying basic life support, following PALS treatment algorithms, and practicing effective resuscitation skills and team dynamics. Through a combination of cognitive learning and psychomotor skills practice, the PALS Course improves students’ confidence and skill levels for delivering effective emergency pediatric care.
This course does not teach BLS skills, interpretation of rhythm strips, or basic PALS pharmacology. Prior to taking the course, students must already be proficient in BLS and reading and interpreting ECG rhythm strips and knowing basic resuscitation pharmacolgy
Following this program, the participants can be expected to:
1. Perform high-quality CPR per American Heart Association (AHA) BLS recommendations.
2. Differentiate between patients who do and do not require immediate intervention..
3. Recognize cardiopulmonary arrest early and begin CPR within 10 seconds
4. Apply team dynamics
5. Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure.
6. Perform early interventions for respiratory distress and failure.
7. Differentiate between compensated and decompensated (hypotensive) shock.
8. Perform early interventions for the treatment of shock.
9. Differentiate between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias.
10.Describe clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias.
11.Implement post-cardiac arrest management.
All participants are required to complete and sign a “verification of attendance” form. After the program, a certificate of completion will be provided to activity participants based on documentation of actual attendance time.
Physicians: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the University of Kansas Medical Center Office of Continuing Medical Education and Hays Medical Center. The University of Kansas Medical Center Office of Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The KU Medical Center Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this live activity for a maximum of 9.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
HaysMedicalCenter is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. The course offering is approved for 12.0 contact hour applicable for RN or LPN re-licensure. Kansas State Board of Nursing Approved Provider Number: LT0021-1138.
