It is an eight hour class that covers signs and symptoms for the most common types of mental illness, and gives attendees a five-step action plan for how to respond. The cost is approximately $21 per textbook, and all participants are required to have one.
Following this program, the participants can be expected to:
Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, ARNPs, Respiratory Therapists, Social Workers, PTs, OTs, and other interested Healthcare Professionals.
Suicidal Behavior, Depressive Symptoms, Non-suicidal Self-Injury
Panic Attacks, Traumatic Events, Anxiety Symptoms
Acute Psychosis, Disruptive or Aggressive Behavior, Understanding Substance Use Disorders
CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
HaysMedicalCenter is approved as a provider of continuing nursing education by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. The course offering is approved for 7.5 contact hour applicable for RN or LPN re-licensure. Kansas State Board of Nursing Approved Provider Number: LT0021-1138.
The Hays Medical Center Respiratory Care Continuing Education Evaluator on behalf of the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts has approved this program for 7.5 CRCE hours. Providership #004.

Amy BirdAmy Bird is a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Addictions Counselor. She obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University in 1993 and began her professional career in the mental health field in 1994 working as a Case Manager in the Community Support Services (CSS) Program of High Plains Mental Health Center (HPMHC). In 1998, Amy obtained her Master’s Degree in Social Worker from the University of Kansas. She continued to work in the CSS Program of HPMHC for the next 19 years as therapist, Team Leader/Supervisor and later Program Manager and Assistant Clinical Director for CSS Services. In 2017, Amy transferred to the Outpatient Program of HPMHC as an Integrated Care/Outpatient Therapist. Amy became certified to teach Adult Mental Health First Aid in 2012 and Youth Mental Health First Aid in 2017.
Jessica SherfickJessica Sherfick is a Licensed Master Social Worker and Licensed Addictions Counselor. She obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Fort Hays State University in 2013 and a Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Kansas in 2014. Jessica is employed by High Plains Mental Health Center as the Assistant Clinical Director for Community Support Services. She specializes in behavioral health services for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. A strong believer in breaking down the stigma of mental illness, Jessica became certified to teach Adult Mental Health First Aid in 2017 and Youth Mental Health First Aid in 2018.
