8TH ANNUAL SPORTS MEDICINE SYMPOSIUM

OBJECTIVES

Following this program, the participants can be expected to:
   1.Explain the possible causes of lower back pain.
   2.Analyze treatment options for lower back pain.
   3.Review the Pertinent Anatomy and Physiology in relation to abdominal trauma.
   4.Discuss the prevalence of injuries resulting from blunt abdominal trauma in athletes.
   5.Explain how to perform sideline evaluation and disposition athletes who have sustained a blunt abdominal trauma.
   6.Describe the significiance of underlying organomegaly in athletes, and the current consensus on management.
   7.Summarize clinical findings from recent studies related to Patellofemoral Joint disorders.
   8.Explain treatment options for Patellofemoral Joint Disorders.
   9.Discuss the important role of the gluteals with walking and running.
   10.Describe how to test for poor gluteal recruitment with walking.
   11.Analyze the progression of exercises needed to achieve sufficient gluteal activation with walking/running.
   12.Discuss the functional criteria, biomechanics of the kinetic chain, proprioceptor physiology, and sport specific muscle function as it relates to performance training and rehab and be able to demonstrate 3-D training methodologies to train the core/Abs as exhibited in the lecture and labs.
   13.To critically analyze the research concerning the core and the muscle function of the core and how this relates to performance.
   14.Demonstrate 3-D core exercises.
   15.Compare current care training methods using a functional grid evaluation.
   16.Discuss the value of the 3-D eccentric role of the Abs/core in sport as opposed to the conventional concentric body building model and be able to experience this with lab demo.
   17.Demonstrate a model to train the abs/core in a circuit training system that is divided up into the planes of motion to overload the core to develop definition and power.

This symposium is targeted toward Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, RNs, LPNs, Physicians, Physicians Assistants and all Allied Health Care Professionals with an interest in sports medicine.
